This is an early Mining Explosives Blaster, made by Siemans Brothers & Co London.
Made from Oak Wood, Brass and Leather. Size 7″ x 5 1/2″ x 5″. Weight is 5kg. (Back view) showing the exploder button and Leather strap handle.
It is worked on the dynamo mechanism, the handle is wound to produce a current which is built up inside the box and released through the 2 Brass screw terminals on the top by pressing the button on the unit. The dynamite would be charged with an electric detonator and the wiring would be connected to the 2 Brass screw terminals. The electric current generated by the dynamo would be used to set off the detonator and in turn the dynamite.
One this size and age would normally be able to explode between 8-12 detonators at one time.
