A Coal Delivery Man’s Leather Back Protector.
This leather back protector has shoulder and waist straps, has reinforced leather strips and is studded with copper rivets.
Made from leather, 5mm in thickness.
Size – 26″ inches long by 16″ inches wide.
Widely used by house coal delivery men working on N.C.B. or private rounds supplying residents with coal by carrying 1cwt (one hundred-weight) sacks from the cart or lorry into the people’s coal sheds or dumped on the roadside. Miners would get an allowance of about eight ton of coal per year, twenty 1cwt sacks equalled one ton of coal. These leather garments protected the coalman’s back.
