Mr A. L. Powell – Milk Bottle.
A glass pint milk bottle from the company of Mr A. L. Powell, 111 Alma Street, Abertillery.

Made from glass.

Dated 1950’s.

Size – 8 1/2″ x 3″ inches.

Acid etched into the bottle in capital letters are the words – A. L. Powell, Dairyman, 111 Alma Street, Abertillery (as seen in the image left).

The price of a bottle of milk from Mr Powell in the 1950’s was 1/1d. There was a court case in that year in which a juvenile was involved in the theft of two pint bottles of milk from the premises of the dairyman Mr Powell, the magistrates were told that the cost of the two stolen bottles in total were 2/2p.

 

Mr A. L. Powell.
Mr Arthur Lewis Powell was a dairyman based at 111 Alma Street, Abertillery on the junction with Preston Street (as seen in the image), just south of Blaenau Gwent Chapel grave yard.

Mr Arthur Lewis Powell R.A., Gunner was the son of Mr and Mrs D. L. Powell of 17 Rowan Crescent, Griffithstown, Pontypool. On Saturday 22nd of April, Mr Powell married Miss Lorna Jarrett, daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Jarrett of 5 Grosvenor Road, Abertillery.

P. W. Chinchillas.
In 1957 Mrs Lorna Powell with her sister-in-law Mrs Vera Winston began breeding chinchillas.

On Thursday 26th of March 1959, the South Wales Gazette ran a story, titled – “The Breeding of Chinchillas has brought a new industry to Abertillery”, Mrs Powell, the wife of dairyman Mr Arthur Powell and her sister-in-law Mrs Winston have established a trading partnership under the name of P. W. Chinchillas. They are members of the Chinchilla Association of Great Britain and the Fur Breeders Association.

The Champion Chinchilla.
On Tuesday 22nd of December 1959, the Western Mail reported on the success of Mr Arthur Lewis Powell’s bred chinchilla in becoming Champion of Britain. There were 363 entries and it had won the Grand Show Champion Cup and a Challenge Cup in the Fur Breeders Association National Show in London. Mr Powell was Vice President of the Border Counties Chinchilla Club.

In July 1965, Mr Powell of 111 Alma Street, Abertillery began advertising his Self Drive Car Hire Service – Telephone 2198.
