Miss E. M. Jones.
E. M. Jones was Miss Elizabeth Morgan Jones, of 8 Market Street, Abertillery, an off-license and a wine and spirit merchant. Also an agent for the Anglo Bavarian and Rogers A.K. Ales, Oakhill, Whitbread, Inde Coope, Burton Ales and W & A Gilby’s Wines.
Miss Elizabeth Morgan Jones was born in 1846 at Ebbw Vale, she was a spinster and took the business over from Mr Thomas Robins in 1903. Mr Robins had applied for a licence to sell alcohol in Abertillery as far back as 1892. Miss Elizabeth Jones was assisted in the licence trade by her sister Miss Mary Sophia Jones, born 1842, their brother Mr James Thomas Jones a medical practitioner born 1848 also lived at the premises on Market Street.
The Past History of the Jones Sisters.
It seems the Jones sisters had a long history in connection with the licensing trade as on the 1871 census Miss Elizabeth Morgan Jones and her sister Miss Mary Sophia Jones were living at the Greyhound Inn, at Bedwellty, Tredegar with their uncle Mr James Griffiths.
On the 1881 census Miss Elizabeth Morgan Jones was landlady at the Boars Head Inn, Llandaff Road, Pontypridd, assisted by her sister Mary Sophia Jones.
On the 1891 census Elizabeth and Mary were visitors at a Mrs Mary Jones house in Ynys Meardy Road, Briton Ferry.
They couldn’t be found on the 1901 census but as mentioned above they came to Abertillery in 1903 to take over the trade of Mr Robins at Market Street.
It is unclear as to when Miss Jones left the trade although in later years she moved to Porthcawl and in August 1939 Miss E. M. Jones died. News reports stated her licence for the trade had been transferred to a Mr John Alfred Jones.
