Eskimo Inuit Harpoon Tip

Old Eskimo Harpoon Tip.
Bering Sea Culture. 

Made from wood (partially fossilised). Size 4″ inches.

Dated 200 BC – 500 AD.

The harpoon tip would be inserted onto a long shaft. A piece of sinew or cord would be threaded through the slit in the Harpoon tip, when pushed through into the animals body the tip would remain in the animal the hunter would pull on the tip with the cord which would cause the tip to twist sideways locking in place under the skin preventing the animal from escaping, or when killed easily dragged home.
