Goodman Weiner, Nantyglo – Mineral Water Codd Bottle

Mr Goodman Weiner Mineral Water Codd Bottle.
This is the lower part of a mineral water Codd bottle from the company of Mr Goodman Weiner of the Garn Cross, Nantyglo, Monmouthshire. The bottle has its neck missing.

Made from glass.

Size 4″ x 2 1/4″ inches. The bottle would have been 7″ in height had it been whole. 

Dated – 1895-1910?

The bottle was manufactured by the South Wales Glass Co Ltd of Newport.

Mr Goodman Weiner.
In the late 1880’s early 1890’s Mr Goodman Weiner a Russian Jew born in Russia in 1853 came to live at 17 Garn Cross, Nantyglo as a furniture dealer, he was married to Mrs Dinah or Deborah Weiner nee Norvick also born in Russia in 1854.

On the 1891 census Mr Goodman Weiner was a glazier by trade, he and his wife were living at the Garn Cross, Nantyglo with their children and family – Master Abraham Weiner, born in Russia 1877 and Miss Bessie Weiner, born in Russia in 1878. Living at the same address were Mr Barnet Norvick a brother-in-law, born in Russia in 1843, Mr Nathaniel Weiner a brother, born in Russia in 1860 and a servant girl Miss Matilda Hinds, born at Varteg, Pontypool in 1873.

Chamber of Trade.
In the mid 1890’s Mr G. Weiner was a member of the Nantyglo Chamber of Trade.

Pawnbroker.
In 1895 Mr Goodman Weiner applied for a pawnbroker’s license and he was trading from the Garn Cross, Nantyglo.

Metal Dealer.
In 1896 Mr Weiner and Mr David Matrz described as Jews from the Garn Cross, Nantyglo were trading as metal dealers.

Mineral Water Manufacturer.
I cannot find any information as to when Mr Goodman Weiner was manufacturing or dealing in the mineral water trade at Nantyglo although he had Codd bottles made bearing his name (as seen in the main featured image above).

On the 1901 census Mr Weiner was still at the Garn Cross, Nantyglo as a pawnbroker. His wife was listed as being Deborah although this may be a misprint. Living with them were – Mr Joseph Levyn, a nephew, born in 1875, Mr Morris Norvick, a nephew, born in 1873, Miss Bessie Matrz, a niece, born in 1879 and Miss Gertie Weiner, a niece, born in 1885.

In 1920 G. Weiner is listed as a pawnbroker on the Kelly’s Directory but it is unclear as to when the family later moved from Nantyglo.

The Death of Mr Goodman Weiner.
Mr Goodman Weiner passed away on January 14th, 1930, at 77 years of age. At the time of his death he was living in Bournemouth, England. It was reported in the Western Mail that probate was granted to Mr Abraham Weiner a school master of 40 Bergholt Crescent, Stoke Newington and Mr Isaac Pruss of Norwich Avenue, Bournemouth, England.

The Death of Mrs Deborah Weiner.
Mrs Deborah Weiner passed away in 1933, at the time of death she was registered as living in Bournemouth.
