Messrs C. Jones – Ale and Porter Manufacturers Brynmawr – Stoneware Bottle.

Size 7″ x 3″inches.

Mr Walter Charles Jones.
Mr Walter Charles Jones was a brewer at Brynmawr during the mid to late 19th century. Mr Jones was a brewer and cooper by trade and the family had their own ale and porter stoneware bottles manufactured and transfer printed by Messrs Price of Bristol.

There are two known designs, one with “C. Jones, Ale and Porter Merchants, Brynmawr” and another slightly different shape bottle with “C. Jones, Brynmawr”. I believe the C. Jones refers to Mrs Catherine Jones, Mr Jones’ wife.

Mr Walter Charles Jones was born in 1829 at Kington, Hereford. His wife was Mrs Catherine Jones, born in 1835 at Cardiff. They lived at Brynmawr as early as 1867. Mr Walter Charles Jones was a brewer and cooper by trade. Their children were as follows – Miss Frances E. Jones, born 1863 at Cardiff. Miss Sarah A. Jones, born 1865 at Cardiff. Miss Mary M. Jones, born 1867 at Brynmawr. Mr Albert D. Jones, born 1869 at Brynmawr, Albert was a brewer by trade. Mr John H. Jones, born 1870 at Brynmawr, John was a cooper by trade and Miss Laura E. Jones, born in 1874 at Brynmawr.

Throughout their time at Brynmawr the family lived at various addresses, Curzon Street, 22 Bailey Street, 188 King Street and later their residence was Essendene House, Brynmawr although this premises might have been 188 King Street?

Beer Retailer Application.
In August 1891 Mr Walter Charles Jones applied to the General Annual Licensing Meeting for a license to sell beer by retail to be consumed at 32 King Street, Brynmawr.

In the 1891 Kelly’s Directory a Mrs Catherine Jones of Nantyglo is listed as a beer retailer. I am not certain if this is the same Mrs Catherine Jones as the wife of Mr Walter Charles Jones of Brynmawr?

The Death of Mr Walter Charles Jones.
Mr Walter Charles Jones passed away in 1898.

On the 1901 census Mrs Catherine Jones was living with three of her daughters, Miss Sarah A. Jones, Miss Frances E. Jones and Miss Mary M. Jones at 27 Alma Street, Brynmawr. Also living at the property was Miss Florence L. Ingram, aged four, a niece of Miss Sarah A. Jones, the head of the household.
