National Union of Mineworkers Stickers and Flyer.
An original flyer informing people of the “Great Switch Off” planned for Saturday the 19th of December 1992, in support of the miners who marched 636 miles from Glasgow to London to protest against pit closures in the Scottish Coalfield.
People were asked to switch off their lights nationwide at 8.00pm for 5 minutes to coincide with the miners reaching London at that time.
The back of the flyer (as seen left) is signed by Mr Arthur Scargill, President of the National Union of Mineworkers.
The following organisations were advertised on the flyer as giving their full support –
STUC, the Scottish Trades Union Congress;
Campaign For Jobs And Recovery;
The Scotland Area of the National Union of Mineworkers:
Also, one sheet of National Union of Mineworkers stickers – “Save Our Pits”, “Coal Not Dole” and “Support The Miners”. I can’t be sure if the stickers are from the 1984 era or a later printing set to be issued for the Scottish march, or perhaps a mixture of both?
