Penybont Colliery Sinking Report 1848.
A newspaper report from the Principality Newspaper dated Friday 8th of September 1848. It shows the Tyr Nicholas Colliery, Cwmtillery Colliery, progressing. Originally sunk under the ownership of Mr Thomas Brown, purchased by Mr John Russell in 1847 and being expanded under the supervision of Mr Martin of Risca. The report also mentions the progress of the Penybont Colliery sinking under the supervision of Mr Matthew Habakkuk of Abertillery for its owners Messrs T. P. & D. Price of Brecon. 

Mr Matthew Habakkuk was a well-known inhabitant, surveyor, mining engineer and coal level owner, he was associated with the levels at Cwmtillery and the Coed Cae Tillery Level, close to where the top Arael View housing estate is today. 

 

Points of Interest – Messrs T. P. & D. Price were Mr Thomas Protheroe Price and Mr David Price, brothers from Brecon.
