Rose Heyworth Colliery.
Rose Heyworth Colliery – The Drift Entrance, looking down the drift into Cwmtillery Colliery. The drift was 4,965′ feet long at a 1 in 5 gradient.
To the right of the image can be seen recently dismantled Meco Conveyor belt structure, also the Cable Conveyor Belt which ran from Cwmtillery to Rose Heyworth, powered by the huge motor on the surface at Rose Heyworth. It conveyed coal and waste from underground at Cwmtillery, Blaensychan and Rose Heyworth into the Coal Preparation Plant.
The Cable Belt.
The difference between a normal conveyor belt and a cable belt is as follows – With a normal conveyor belt, the belt itself pulls the coal and waste by means of a powerful motor turning a series of rollers, the belt is stretched and tensioned through and between the rollers to cause movement. With a cable belt the belt is resting on two steel cables, one each side along its length which are pulled by a more powerful motor. These cables are under great tension and not the belt.
