The Brynmawr Mineral Water Company
.

The company was formed by Mr Charles Bull and commenced business in June 1902. Mr Bull began the company with a £200 loan from Mr James Greatwood, landlord of the Black Lion Inn, Brynmawr. After getting into financial difficulties Mr Charles Bull went bankrupt in August 1903. The South Wales Gazette announced the bankruptcy and reported that Mr Charles Bull was living at King Street, Brynmawr and his occupation was a coal miner and aerated water manufacturer.

Mr Charles Bull.
Mr Charles Bull was born in 1866 at Llangattock, Brecknock. His wife was Mrs Mary Jane Bull nee Evans, born in 1868 at Brynmawr, Brecknock, South Wales. The couple married in 1889.

On the 1901 census they lived at 99 King Street, Brynmawr with their children – Miss Ethel L. Bull, born 1889. Miss Annie M. Bull, born 1891. Miss Hilda Bull, born 1896. Master Charles H. Bull, born 1898. Miss Gladys M. Bull, born 1899 and Miss Evelyn Bull, born in 1900. On the 1911 census, two more children was recorded – Miss Doris Bull, born in 1908 and Master Cyril Bull, born in 1910.

The Llwyd Coed Colliery.
In April 1914 Mr Charles Bull began business as a colliery owner and worked the Llwyd Coed Colliery, Nantyglo. The business was carried on under the name of M & C. H. Bull. At this time Mr and Mrs Bull lived at Brookfield House, 6 Brook Street, Brynmawr. The colliery ownership didn’t last long as in 1916 Mr Bull once again went bankrupt.

Mr James Greatwood.
Mr James Greatwood was born in 1853 at Brynmawr. He was landlord of the Black Lion Inn at Brynmawr and was married to Mrs Ann Greatwood nee Llewelly? Although his wife Ann sadly died in February 1901. Mr Greatwood loaned £200 to Mr Charles Bull to form the Brynmawr Mineral Water Company in June 1902.

In 1902 Mr James Greatwood had remarried, his wife was listed as being Mrs Augusta May Greatwood nee Jones, born in 1865 at Llanfoist. On the 1911 census they had a daughter Miss Gwendoline Greatwood, born 1904. At this time, Mr Greatwood was listed as a market gardener and was living at Belle Vue House, Mardy, Abergavenny.
