The Six Bells Tennis Club – An Early History 1925-1970

The Six Bells Tennis Club.
The Official Opening of the Six Bells Recreational Grounds.
On Saturday 25th of April 1925, the Six Bells Recreational Grounds were officially opened. The opening ceremony was performed by Councillor Mr David Walters. Mr Walters was presented with a silver engraved key with which to perform the opening ceremony.

A Description of the Six Bells Recreational Grounds.
A descriptive account of the Recreation Ground – The park was laid down at a final cost of £9,500 with £7,000 of that on wages, with £2,500 on materials, Towards the total Cost of £9,500, £2,100 was contributed by the Miners Welfare Fund.

The park covers an area of two and three-quarters of an acre and comprises two ash covered tennis courts surrounded by wire netting, a bowling green, a children’s playing ground, a pavilion and extensive shrubberies. An acre and a quarter of the land was held on lease from the Cwm Estate from June 1909 for 99 years at £5. per annum, while the remainder was freehold ground and was given to the council by Mr T. P. Price in 1912.

The First Tennis Tournament.

The Abertillery Tennis Club players were as follows – Mr Sheean; Mrs Lewis; Mr John; Miss Fox; Miss Deere and Mr Fox: Abertillery defeated Six Bells by 66 – 33.

1926 Season.
Six Bells Tennis Club Meeting.
On Tuesday 2nd of March 1926, a general meeting of the Six Bells Tennis Club was held at the Presbyterian Church, Six Bells. In reading the financial statement, the secretary drew attention to the promising results achieved during 1925. He reported that there was a balance in hand of £2. 12s. 8d., his report was approved and accepted.

The Tennis Club Officers for 1926.
The officers for 1926 were elected as follows – Mr W. J. Owen (Chairman); Mrs Harrington (Treasurer); Mr A. Curthoys (Secretary) and Mr H. Williams (Assistant Secretary): It was decided that the officers were to sit on the Match Committee which was to also include the following members – Misses G. Marson; M. Badger and A. Williams: Messrs C. Denning and H. Burton: Mr V. Banks and Miss C. Williams were elected gentlemen’s and ladies’ captains respectively. It was resolved that the Parks Committee be approached with a view of securing satisfactory arrangements for the use of the courts at the Six Bells Park. It was also stated that the enthusiasm displayed augurs well for the coming season, for which attractive fixtures and tournaments are being arranged. The increase in membership is very gratifying.

1927 Season.
Catholic Hall Dance.
On Wednesday 23rd of February 1927, a dance in connection with the Six Bells Tennis Club was held at the Catholic Hall. The M.C. was Mr W. H. Williams. Prizes were given out on the night to the club’s competition winners as follows – Ladies’ singles – Miss G. Marson: Gentlemen’s singles – Mr E. Bull: Ladies’ doubles – Miss E. Marson and Miss Badger: Gentlemen’s doubles – Messrs H. Harrington and H. Burton

Six Bells v Abertillery.
On Saturday 23rd of April 1927, Six Bells entertained Abertillery in a tennis match at Six Bells Park. The visitors won 8 events to 1, 16 sets to 2 and 105 games to 40. The Six Bells players were as follows – Mr W. Phillips; Miss A. Williams; Mr H. Burton; Mrs M. Harrington; Mr E. Bull and Miss C. Williams:

1928 Season.
The Newport and District League.
In 1928 the Six Bells Tennis Club entered into the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League.

On Saturday 5th of May 1928, Six Bells Tennis Club opened the new season, their opponents were the Victoria Tennis Club. The home team won by 14 events to 2 and 203 games to 96. The Six Bells players were as follows – Mr Curthoys; Miss C. Williams; Mr W. Phillips; Miss L. Evans; Mr E. Bull; Mrs Ray Moore; Mr R. Clark and Miss R. Weaver:

Six Bells v Abersychan.
On Saturday 12th of May 1928, Six Bells Tennis Club played Abersychan away, the Six Bells Club won 13 events to 1 and 161 games to 102. The Six Bells players were as follows – Mr W. H. 1929 Season
The First Annual Dance.
On Wednesday night the 3rd of April 1929, the South Wales Gazette reported on the first annual dance in connection with the Six Bells Tennis Club was held at the Drill Hall, Abertillery. The M.C.’s were Superintendent R. Baker, S. P. Gunn and V. Banks. The hall had been decorated under the direction of P.C. Dries. The committee were as follows – Messrs S. C. Denning (Chairman); R. A. Smith (Hon. Secretary and Treasurer); Miss C. Williams; Messrs A. E. Curthoys; L. C. Whittock; W. A. Phillips; V. Banks and D. Six Bells v Abertillery.
On Saturday 20th April 1929, the Six Bells Tennis Club played Abertillery at Six Bells Park. Six Bells won 9 events to nil, 16 sets to 2 and 113 games to 55. The Six Bells players were – E. Bull; R. Weaver; A. E. Curthoys; C. Williams; W. A. Phillips and F. Whittock:

Six Bells v Lovells Athletic.
On Saturday 15th of June 1929, Six Bells Tennis Club played Lovells Athletic in the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League (The Men’s “C” Section) Six Bells won 5 events to 1, 11 sets to 3 and 80 games to 52, with three events unfinished. The Six Bells players were as follows – Mr W. A. Phillips; Mr A. E. Curthoys; Mr E. Bull; Mr R. A. Smith; Mr S. C. Denning and Mr Islwyn Jones: The was a mixed doubles friendly match played on the same day at Gilwern, Six Bells lost 3 events to 6 and 45 games to 54.

The Newport and District Lawn Tennis League Championship Winners.
On Friday 12th of July 1929 the South Wales Gazette reported – Last Saturday, 6th of July 1929, the Six Bells Tennis Club’s victory over the Lysaghts team saw them win the championship of the Men’s “C” Section of the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League. It was seen as a remarkable achievement in view of the fact that this is their first season of the league. According to league rules the team will now be promoted to the “B” section of the league for the 1930 season.

The Pleasance and Harper Challenge Cup.
The South Wales Gazette, Friday 12th of July 1929, as above, went on to say – The struggle for supremacy, which entitles Six Bells to the Pleasance and Harper Challenge Cup, was between them and Radios’ of Newport, who ran them very closely. Six Bells, leading by three events up to last Saturday’s match when Lysaghts were defeated by 9 events to nil, 18 sets to nil and 108 games to 34, which decided the issue.

The Dance and Prize Distribution – Newport and District Tennis League.
On Thursday night, 21st of November 1929, a dance, in connection with the Newport and District Tennis League took place at Stow Hill Baths, Newport. The occasion was attended by about 350 guests where the presentation of cups and spoons was made. Mr Godfrey Phillips (Chairman of the League) presided at the ceremony. Mr Phillips paid tribute to Six Bells, Whiteheads and Hillsborough on their achievements. Amongst the many prizes distributed, Six Bells were awarded the Pleasance and Harper Challenge Cup. Some of the teams who were mentioned as playing in the league were – Whiteheads (Newport), Hillsborough, Park Terrace (Ponypool), Ebbw Vale, Blaina, Pontnewydd and Crosskeys.

The Annual Dance.
On Wednesday night the 31st of December 1929, the South Wales Gazette reported on the second annual dance in connection with the Six Bells Tennis Club was held at the Drill Hall, Abertillery. The music was supplied by the Rialto Band and the duties of the M.C.’s were carried out by Superintendent R. Baker, Messrs V. Banks, A. N. Harrison and S. P. Gunn. The hall had been decorated under the direction of P.C. Dries. The committee responsible for the dance were as follows – Messrs S. C. Denning (Chairman); R. A. Smith (Hon. Secretary and Treasurer); Messrs A. E. Curthoys; L. C. Whittock; E. Bull; W. A. Phillips; V. Banks; Misses F. Whittock and R. Thomas: The services of Mr and Mrs J. Moore; Miss M. Ochiltree; Mrs N. Hickson; Mrs A. Whitcombe; Mrs A. Jones and Mr and Mrs F. Whittock at the buffet were greatly appreciated. There is a list of guests, too many to write, although available on request.

1930 Season
The Newport and District Tennis League.
On Tuesday 21st of January 1930, the Six Bells Tennis Club stated that they proposed to enter the Newport and District League and to be represented by a gent’s team and a mixed team and had asked for the use of the courts at Six Bells Park for the coming season on all Saturday’s during the months of May, June and July from 2.00pm until 7.00pm and on alternate Saturday’s in all other months with the usual court facilities on one evening each week, preferably on a Wednesday. The request was granted.

The Marriage of Mr Whittock and Miss Williams.
On Tuesday 26th of August 1930, the Western Mail newspaper reported on the marriage the previous Monday of two Monmouthshire tennis players at the Presbyterian Church of Wales at Six Bells. Mr Luther Charles Whittock, only son or Mr and Mrs George Whittock of 34 Marlborough Road, Six Bells and Miss Anita Mary Williams of the Goodmayes Elementary School, London, formerly a member of the Arrael Mixed School teaching staff, at Aberbeeg, the only daughter of Mr and Mrs William Williams of 15 Griffin Street, Six Bells. The Bridesmaids were Misses Laura Evans (London), Nancy James and Flossie Whittock with Esme Moore as flower girl. The best man was Mr Reg Smith, the secretary of the Six Bells Tennis Club and uncle to the bridegroom.

The Annual Dance.
On Wednesday 31st of December 1930, the Six Bells Tennis Club, third Annual Dance took place at the Market Hall, Abertillery. The music was supplied by the Metro Syncopators Band and the duties of the M.C.’s were carried out by Superintendent R. Baker and A. N. Harrison. The committee responsible for the dance were as follows – Messrs S. C. Denning (Chairman); R. A. Smith (Hon. Secretary and Treasurer); Messrs A. E. Curthoys; E. R. Clark; E. Bull and L. E. Thomas:
The occasion was advertised in the South Wales Gazette, dancing from 7.00pm to 1.00am. Admission – 2/6 single, 4/6 mixed double.

Men’s Guilds and Table Tennis.
It was stated that table tennis was being played in the area up until the war, although, after the war it was said to have been slow to restart. In 1930 a Men’s Guild was formed at the Somerset Primitive Methodist Church, Abertillery. Amongst other pastimes and sports, table tennis was played, the guild was referred to as “clean healthy sports for boys to participate and to control their tempers”. The Ebenezer Church followed, closely by other guilds formed in other churches and teams from institutes etc. (More on the table tennis league below in 1934).

1931 Season.
The Six Bells Tennis Club Dance in aid of Abertillery and District Hospital.
On Wednesday night, 8th of April 1931, the Six Bells Tennis Club organised a dance held at the Market Hall, Abertillery, in aid of Abertillery and District Hospital. There were over 230 guests present. The M.C.’s were Superintendent R. Baker and Messrs S. P. Gunn and F. A. Hall. Music was provided by the Metro Syncopators Band. The committee responsible for the organisation of the event were as follows – Mr S. C. Denning (Chairman) Miss M. Badger; Messrs E. Bull; Llewellyn Thomas; E. Clark and R. A. The Six Bells Tennis Club Dance.
On Thursday evening, New Years Eve, 31st of December 1931, a dance organised by the Six Bells Tennis Club was held at the Market Hall, Abertillery where 300 guests attended. Music was provided by the Metro Syncopators Band, with Mr C. J. Seaborne being responsible for the decorations. The M.C.’s were Superintendent R. Baker; Messrs S. P. Gunn; A. N. Harrison and F. A. Hall: The organisers were – Mr Reg Smith (Secretary); Mr S. C. Denning (Chairman); Misses Florrie Whittock and M. Badger; Messrs E. Bull; Llewellyn Edmunds’ Ralph Clark; Islwyn Jones and W. H. E. 1932 Season.
Annual Dance.
On Wednesday 28th of December 1932, a dance organised by the Six Bells Tennis Club was held at the Market Hall, Abertillery. Music was provided by the Metro Syncopators Band. The M.C.’s were Superintendent R. Baker and F. A. Hall: The organisers were – Mr E. R. Clark (Chairman); Messrs S. C. Denning; E. Powell; W. H. E. Williams; I. Jones and Mr R. A. Smith (Secretary): It was stated that 260 people attended. There is a list of guests, too many to write, although available on request.

At the end of the 1932 season Six Bells were runners up in the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League.

1933 Season.
Reservation of Tennis Courts.
In April 1933 the Abertillery District Council stated the Six Bells Park courts were reserved for the Six Bells Tennis Club as follows – Two courts on all Saturdays during the months of May, June and July and alternate Saturdays during the other months, together with one court on a Wednesday of each week after 5.pm, subject to the usual charges being paid.

At the end of the 1933 season Six Bells were runners up in the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League.

1934 Season.
Annual Dance.
On Wednesday 3rd of January 1934, the Six Bells Tennis Club held their annual dance at the Market Hall, Abertillery. The music was supplied by the Metro Syncopators. The M.C.’s were Superintendent R. Baker; Messrs S. P. Gunn; A. N. Harrison and F. A. Hall: The dance committee were – Messrs E. Bull (Chairman); E. R. Clark (Vice-Chairman); W. H. E. Williams; I. Jones; R. A. Ticket Price Reductions.
On Tuesday 27th of March 1934, a monthly meeting of the Abertillery District Council was held at which the council debated the charges for tennis and the application of the Six Bells Club for a reduction on the price of season tickets for the unemployed. It was recommended that the season tickets for tennis for unemployed persons or the wives of unemployed persons to be reduced to – Gentlemen 7s. 6d., Ladies 6s. Unemployed card were to be produced with the applications. The foregoing charges apply to the Abertillery, Six Bells and Llanhilleth Tennis Courts.

Six Bells v Bailey Park, Abergavenny.
On Saturday 5th of May 1934, the Six Bells Tennis Club played Bailey Park, Abergavenny at Six Bells. The Men’s “B” Section lost 4 events to 5, 8 sets to 13 and 88 games to 105. The Six Bells players were as follows – W. H. E. Williams; A. Marson; E. R. Clark; A. Norris; W. Taylor and R. Baker: In the Mixed “B” Section, Six Bells won 5 events to 4, 11 sets to 8 and 93 games to 83. The Six Bells players were as follows – E. Bull; Mrs James; I. Jones and Mrs Ralph:

Abertillery Trades and Labour Council Meeting.
On Tuesday evening, 10th of July 1934, a meeting of the Abertillery Trades and Labour Council took place at the Institute. Mr A. T. E. Andrews (Chairman) presided, supported by Mrs E. M. Hoskins (Vice-President); Mr Bert Moore (Secretary); Mr Len Hill (Assistant Secretary) and M. J. H. Kingston (Treasurer): At this meeting the income and expenditure of the bowls and tennis clubs of the Abertillery district was published. The income from bowls was -Abertillery Park £17, Six Bells £26 and Llanhilleth £7, total £50. The income from tennis was – Abertillery Park £71, Six Bells £30 and Llanhilleth £31, total £132. The expenditure on bowls was – Abertillery Park £72, Six Bells £75 and Llanhilleth £75, total £222. The expenditure on tennis – Abertillery Park £98, Six Bells £62 and Llanhilleth £60, total £220. It was not reported if this was yearly or half yearly, takings and outgoings.

The Marriage of Mr Williams and Miss Phillips.
In August 1934, at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Abertillery, Mr William H. E. Williams , son of ex-Councillor Mr W. Williams of 7 Jubilee Road, Six Bells married Miss Eileen Phillips, daughter of Mr W. Phillips a baker and Mrs Phillips of Bargoed formerly of Abertilllery. Miss Phillips was a member of the staff of the Six Bells Infants School and Mr Williams was on the staff of the Ty’r Graig School at Llanhilleth and is also a popular member of the Six Bells Tennis Club.

Men’s Club Championship.
On Saturday 25th of August 1934, Mr Erne Bull won the singles championship of the Six Bells Tennis Club when he defeated Mr Tom Williams in the final 6-3, 6-1. It was also stated that Six Bells Mixed “B” have a chance of becoming winners of their section in the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League

At the end of the 1934 season Six Bells Tennis Club were runners up in the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League.

The Table Tennis League.
In May 1934, the Somerset Street, Primitive Methodist Church, Men’s Guild, held their annual meeting. At this meeting it was decided to ask the secretary of the guild to meet with secretaries of other clubs with a view to re-establish a Table Tennis League in Abertillery and district. There are later reports of a Western Valley Table Tennis League where the following guilds and clubs participated – Nantyglo Institute “A”: Nantyglo Institute “B”: St Michaels Church Social Club: Somerset Street Primitive Methodist Church Guild “A”: Somerset Street Primitive Methodist Church Guild “B”: Cwmtillery Celtic: Brynmawr and Six Bells: Some of the Six Bells table tennis players were named as follows – Mr T. Bull; Mr E. Bull; Mr W. Dando; Mr R. Hanks; Mr G. Box; Mr Radford and Mr W. G. Lovell: The season began in October and went on throughout the winter into spring.

By December 1947, the table tennis league had expanded and split into a Senior Division and a Junior Division which boasted nine clubs in the seniors and four clubs in the juniors. The game and various leagues carried on well into the 1960’s and maybe further. More research is needed.

1935 Season.
Gaer Park.
The Western Mail newspaper stated the Six Bells Tennis Club opened the season with a game against Gaer Park, at Six Bells and won by 6 events to 3, 13 sets to 7 and 98 games to 81.

At the end of the 1935 season Six Bells were runners up in the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League.

Annual Dance.
On 31st of December 1935 Annual Dance at the Market Hall, Abertillery. The music was supplied by the Metro Syncopators. The M.C.’s were Superintendent R. Baker D.C.C.; Messrs S. P. Gunn; A. N. 1936 Season.
Double Honour.
On Friday 3rd of July 1936, the South Wales Gazette reported on the Six Bells Tennis Club achieving a double honour. The Men’s “B” Section won the H. C. Giles Cup in connection with Newport and District Lawn Tennis League and the Mixed “B” Section of the same league won the H. Edwards Challenger Cup. It was said that it was the first time this double feat had been accomplished in the sections referred to and the Six Bells Tennis Club were promoted to Section “A” for the 1937 season.

1937 Season.
Newport and District Lawn Tennis League.
The Six Bells Tennis Club entered into the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League Section “A”.

Undefeated Six Bells Team.
On Friday 17th of September 1937, the South Wales Gazette reported on the men’s doubles team of the Six Bells Tennis Club successfully defeating Pontnewynydd six events to three in a match the previous Saturday. By winning this match they have won the Newport and District Lawn Tennis Cup and League Championship, having gone through the season in Section “A” Men’s Doubles without a defeat. The men’s doubles team members who won the championship were as follows – Mr E. Bull; Mr I. Jones; Mr D. Williams; Mr D. C. Moore; Mr W. H. Williams and Mr W. Taylor:

Six Bells Tennis Club Invincible.
In November 1937 the South Wales Gazette ran the story – Six Bells Tennis Club celebrated their invincibility in the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League throughout the season by holding a dinner, dance and presentation at the Bush Hotel, Abertillery. Captain A. N. Harrison of Aberbeeg, president of the club, presided, supported by Councillor Mr George Jones, vice chairman of the Abertillery Urban District Council; County Councillor H. Phinnemore; Mr H. Radford of Newport, chairman of the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League; Mrs H. Radford and Miss Radford and Mr W. B. Marshall of Newport, secretary of the league:

The President, Mr A. N. Harrison said, Six Bells had one of the proudest records of any club in Gwent. It was this news article that it was reiterated that the Six Bells Tennis Club The Club, which was formed in 1925 entered into the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League in 1928, won Section “C” Cup for men in 1929 and were promoted to Section “B”, were runners-up in this section in 1932-1933-1934 and 1935, won Section “B” Men’s Cup in 1936 and also Section “B” Mixed Cup in the same year with both teams undefeated. The club was promoted to Section “A”, they won Section “A” Men’s Cup in 1937 again undefeated.

After the speeches, Mr H. Radford presented the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League Cup to Mr E. Bull, captain of the men’s team, while Mrs Radford presented silver tennis spoons to the members of the teams – Messrs E. Bull; I. Jones; D. C. Williams; W. H. Williams; W. H. Smith; A. Hill; B. Taylor; R. Baker; W. Taylor; J. Powell and D. L. Moore: Captain A. N. Harrison presented Mrs W. James with the A. N. Harrison Cup as winner of the women’s singles championship 1937 and the E. R. Clark Cup to Mr D. P. L. Moore as winner of the men’s singles 1937 along with medals for men’s doubles championship to Mr D. C. Williams and Mr D. P. L. Moore. The junior championship medal was presented to Mr Harry Wilson. Mr E. Bull presented Mr Reg Smith with a Westminster chiming clock on behalf of the club in appreciation of services rendered during his term of secretaryship from 1927 to 1936.

Annual Dance.
On Friday 31st of December 1937, the Six Bells Tennis Club held its annual dance at the Market Hall, Abertillery. The music was supplied by the Metro Syncopators Band and the duties of the M.C.’s were carried out by Superintendent R. Baker D.C.C.; P.s. Phipps and P.c. Dries; Messrs Sam Horler; W. Williams and Vic Banks: Mrs C. J. Seaborne was in charge of the buffet. The dance committee were – Messrs W. H. E. Williams (Secretary of the Six Bells Tennis Club); Mr E. Bull (Chairman of the Six Bells Tennis Club) with the committee – Messrs R. A. Smith; I. Jones and W. Taylor: It was stated that 400 people attended the dance, although no guest list was printed.

1938 Season.
Annual Meeting.
On Friday 4th of February 1938, the South Wales Gazette published details of the Six Bells Tennis Club Annual Meeting held the previous Tuesday the 1st of February 1938. Mr E. Bull presided and spoke of the recent successes in the league and also of the interest taken in the junior tournament. The officers elected were – Mr A. N. Harrison (President); Mr E. Bull (Chairman); Mr R. A. Smith (Vice-Chairman); Mr W. H. E. Williams (Secretary and Treasurer); Mr E. Lloyd (Assistant Secretary); Mr D. C. Williams (Captain) and Mr I. Jones (Vice-Captain): The executive committee – Mrs E. Bull; R. Smith; D. C. Williams; I. Jones; R. Baker; E. Lloyd; W. H. Williams; Mrs I. James and Miss D. Dixon: Match committee – Messrs E. Bull; D. C. Williams; I. Jones and W. H. Williams: It was decided to enter men’s and mixed teams in the Newport and District League.

Annual Dance.
On Saturday 31st of December 1938, the Six Bells Tennis Club held its annual dance at the Market Hall, Abertillery. The music was supplied by the Metro Syncopators Dance Band and the duties of the M.C.’s were carried out by Superintendent E. Davies; Sam Horler; W. Williams; Vic Banks and P.c. Dries: The dance committee were – Messrs E. Bull (President); W. H. E. Williams (Secretary); E. Lloyd and D. C. Williams: It was stated that 400 people attended the dance, although no guest list was printed.

1939 Season.
Mr W. H. E. Williams.
On Friday 11th of August 1939, the South Wales Gazette reported on Mr W. H. E. Williams “Six Bells Sportsman’s Success” when Mr Williams of Six Bells passed the Welsh Rugby Union’s examination for referees. He was a well known sportsman, had done an immense amount of work for junior rugby in the valleys. Mr Williams, whose father played for Llanharan, and Pencoed, appeared at inside half for Aberbeeg for several seasons, he also played for Crosskeys, Brynmawr and Dagenham (Essex colours). Mr W. H. E. Williams is vice chairman of the Abertillery and District Junior Rugby League, a member of the Abertillery Elementary School Sports Committee and Captain and Secretary of the Six Bells Tennis Club. Now know as the “Knight of the Whistle” Mr Williams is a teacher at Ty’r Graig School, Aberbeeg.

1940 Season.
Throughout the 1940’s there were hardly any news reports in connection with the Six Bells Tennis Club. I believe the leagues folded as a consequence of the war. The Newport and District Lawn Tennis League restarted in the summer of 1949. The Six Bells Tennis Club still functioned, organised and held parties for various charities etc.

1942 Season.
Eltham Hill School Evacuees.
On Friday 3rd of April 1942, the South Wales Gazette issued notice of permission for the use to the various parks in the district. Permission was granted to the Eltham Hill School evacuees for the use of the Abertillery Tennis Courts and also a field for the use of rounders at a charge of £3. 3s. 0d., for the season. Six Bells Tennis Club was to have use of the tennis courts on alternate Saturdays.

Annual Dance.
31st of December 1942. A dance was held although no details can be found other than the proceeds were given to the Six Bells Comforts Fund.

1943 Season.

On Friday 31st of December 1943, the Six Bells Tennis Club held its annual dance at the Market Hall, Abertillery. The music was supplied by the Metro Syncopators Augmented Dance Band and the duties of the M.C.’s were carried out by Messrs Billy Williams; Det-Con F. Dries and Islwyn Jones: There was a good attendance, with members of H. M. Forces, some of whom had been fighting in the Eighth Army were also present. Proceeds were shared by the Red Cross and Six Bells Comforts Fund.

1944 Season.

On Sunday 31st of December 1944, the Six Bells Tennis Club held its annual dance at the Market Hall, Abertillery. The music was supplied by the Metro Syncopators Dance Band under Mr W. Jones, the duties of the M.C.’s were carried out by Messrs Billy Williams; Detective Constable F. Dries; E. Bull and J. Hatton: There was a good attendance, with members of H. M. Forces home on leave. The buffet was in the charge of representatives of the Six Bells Labour Women’s Section, who comprised – Mesdames George Daggar; C. Young; F. Howells and E. Bird: The organising secretary was Mr Islwyn Jones. The dance proceeds are for Six Bells Tennis Club funds and following the usual practice an allocation is to be forwarded to a local war charity.

Hopkins: The organising secretary was Mr Islwyn Jones and members of the Six Bells Labour Women’s Section were in charge of refreshments.

1946 Season.
Annual Meeting.
In May 1946, the South Wales Gazette reported – at the annual meeting of the Six Bells Tennis Club, it was reported that during the war years the Club had donated £80 to local charities. It was also announced that it was decided that during the coming season a series of club tournaments would be held instead of the usual league matches. At this meeting, the following officers were elected – Mr E. Bull (Chairman); Mr I. Jones (Vice-Chairman); Mr D. Moore (Captain); Mr W. H. E. Williams (Secretary and Treasurer) and Mr E. Lloyd (Assistant Secretary): The executive committee were – Messrs Bull; D. Moore; J. Mounter; W. H. E. Williams; Mrs I. James; Mrs V. Mason and Mrs D. Lloyd: The amount of £80 collected and passed on to charities is equivalent to approximately £4,100 in today’s money.

The Recommencement of the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League.
On Friday 18th of February 1949, the South Wales Gazette announced that Abertillery and Six Bells tennis clubs would give their support to the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League which will be restarted this summer after a lapse of eight years.

On Saturday 8th of May 1948, Six Bells Tennis Club played Ebbw Vale Men. Six Bells won 5 events to 4. The Six Bells Tennis Club team to play Abertillery next week were listed as follows – Mr G. Morgan; Mr R. Nicholls; Mr J. Powell; Mr W, H. E. Williams; Mr M. Rees and Mr J. Smith:

League Success.
On Friday 12th of August 1949, the South Wales Gazette reported – “Six Bells Tennis Stars” – Top of the league and undefeated this year, they have only one more match to play before qualifying for the victors crown in the Newport and District Lawn Tennis League. The men’s team have played and won seven games, leaving them to face Abercarn whom they have previously beaten. The mixed section have done equally well, having won six, losing five but leaving them third in the mixed division. The men’s team have won the cup in two successive years previously and are now assured of a hat trick.

The Application to Enter the Welsh Lawn Tennis League.
The same newspaper article stated that the Six Bells Tennis Club would like to enter the Welsh Lawn Tennis League, although they are prevented from doing so because they have only two courts and the Welsh League requires clubs to have at least three courts. I am not sure if this ruling was altered as in 1959, it was stated that the Six Bells Club was in the Welsh and Newport and District Leagues?

1950 Season.
Annual Meeting.
On Friday 7th of April 1950, the South Wales Gazette reported on the Six Bells Tennis Club’s annual meeting. The officers elected were as follows – Messrs A. N. Harrison (President); C. H. Price and W. J. Owen (Vice-Presidents); E. Bull (Chairman); R. Nicholls (Vice-Chairman); W. H. E. Williams (Secretary and Treasurer); Mrs H. Gaudern (Catering Secretary); Mr T. L. Williams (Captain) and Mrs I. James (Vice-Captain): Chosen for the executive committee were – Messrs E. Bull; R. Nicholls; T. Williams; W. H. E. Williams; W. A. Phillips; and Mesdames I. James and H. Gaudern:

It was stated that the club had a most successful season, the men’s team having won the Lord Tredegar Cup as champions of the Men’s “A” Section in the Newport and District Tennis League. This was the third occasion for the club to win the trophy and they emerged undefeated from last seasons tournaments. The mixed team came third in the Mixed “A” Section in the Newport and District Tennis League. Six Bells will again compete in the Newport League with a mixed team and a gents team. An invitation was extended to tennis enthusiasts who desired to join the club and further information could be obtained from the Secretary Mr W. H. E. Williams, “Trewint” Eastville Road, Six Bells.

Captain Arthur Nicholson Harrison.
On Friday 9th of June 1950, the South Wales Gazette reported on new J.P.s, for the Abertillery, Blaina and Llanhilleth district. It was announced that Captain A. N. Harrison became a Justice of the Peace.

Captain A. N. Harrison, President of the Six Bells Tennis Club, was born in 1892 at Abertillery. The son of Mr William Barrow Harrison, the well known Ironmonger, Councillor and J.P.: Captain Harrison served in the 3rd Mons during the first World War with distinction attaining the rank of Captain. He went on to become the president of the Six Bells Tennis Club. Captain Harrison was a past chairman of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Building Industries Distributors Association.

I am not sure of the date Capt. Harrison became involved with the Six Bells Tennis Club although he was first mentioned in a report of an annual dance held on Wednesday night the 31st of December 1929. It was stated that Mr Harrison was an M.C. on the night of the dance.

Six Bells Tennis Champions.
On Friday 13th of August 1954, the South Wales Gazette ran a story of the Six Bells Tennis Club’s most successful season. The men’s team won the Men’s “A” Section of the Newport and District League, losing only one match and that was by the smallest possible margin. The mixed team was undefeated and had won the Mixed “B” Section Championship of the League.

In addition, individual club members had gained notable successes – Aneurin True won the Junior Championship Cup at the Pontypool Tournament. W. D. Hoskins reached the men’s singles final and Mr T. L. Williams with Mr D. L. P. Moore, formerly of Six Bells, reached the men’s doubles final in the same tournament. It was also stated that these achievements are more impressive when it is realised that almost all the members of the club live within hailing distance of Six Bells Park. This has always been so, and it is doubtful whether any comparable area in Monmouthshire has produced so many good tennis players in the past twenty-five years.

Sunday Opening of the Tennis Courts.
On Friday 7th of June 1957, the South Wales Gazette printed a notice that the Abertillery Urban District Council had opened the Abertillery and Six Bells Parks for the playing of tennis on Sundays, beginning Sunday the 2nd of June. Times were – 10.00am 1.00pm and 2.00pm until closing time. The usual charges applied and it stated that season tickets were not applicable to these games.

The Wedding of the Vice Captain and Captain.
On Saturday 3rd of August 1957, Mr Warwick Mason, the son of Mr and Mrs W. G. Mason or Windsor Road, Six Bells married Miss Maureen Turner, daughter of the late Mr Turner and of Phillis Turner of 138 Alexandra Road, Six Bells at the Tabernacle Congregational Church, Abertillery. Mr Mason is vice captain of the Six Bells men’s team and Miss Turner, his wife, is the captain of the ladies team.

Six Bells Boy Wins Tennis Tournament.
In August 1957, the South Wales Gazette reported on Tony Jones, son of Mr and Mrs William Jones of Windsor Road, Six Bells who had won the boy’s singles championship in the lawn tennis at Pontypool. Tony Jones, a student at Abertillery Grammar School, beat his Six Bells clubmate Ivor Evans 6-1, 6-2, in the final.

In April 1959, advertisements were printed in the South Wales Gazette inviting people who have an interest in playing tennis to to join the Six Bells Tennis Club. the club offers opportunities to play in the Welsh, Newport and District and Gwent mid-week tennis leagues. Club night is Tuesday when the Six Bells courts are available for club members. Applications to Mrs M. Huckin, 6 Blenheim Road, Six Bells.

1960 Season.
Season Ticket Query.
On Friday 4th of March 1960, at a monthly Abertillery Council meeting, a letter from the secretary of the Six Bells Tennis Club was read asking that consideration be given to the issue of season tickets to include the use of the tennis courts at the Six Bells and Abertillery Parks on Sundays, the existing season tickets only covered weekdays only with payment being made separately for Sunday games. The bad state of the tennis courts was also brought up at the meeting. The request was to be considered at a later date.

Closure of the Recreation Ground and Tennis Courts for Repairs.
In July 1960, the Six Bells Recreation Ground and Tennis Courts were closed owing to reconstruction works, further notice will be given when the tennis courts are fit for resumption of play. By order – Reginald H. Eke, Engineer and Surveyor, Abertillery Council – 22nd of July 1960.

1961 Season.
The First Annual Six Bells Tennis Club Junior Tournament.
It was stated that the Six Bells Tennis Club held its first Annual Junior Tournament at the park, Six Bells.

Gareth James, the Welsh Lawn Tennis Association’s Under 16 Champion.
On Friday 1st of September 1961, the South Wales Gazette reported – On Saturday 26th of August 1961, Gareth James won the Welsh Lawn Tennis Association’s under 16 championship, Gareth, a pupil at Nantyglo Grammar School played for Six Bells during the late 1950’s before joining the Stow Park Club, Newport. Mr Bob Wallace, a member of Six Bells Tennis Club spoke of how proud they were to have shared in Gareth’s development as a player.

Also reported was the success of the Six Bells Tennis Club the past season. The club, this year, has completed its most successful season since it was founded. The men’s “A” team were invincible throughout the season, they won their section of the the Welsh League (Division III) and beat the winners of two other sections in play-offs’ to gain promotion to Division II. The men’s “B” team, who suffered only one defeat finished at the top of the Newport and District League, and, for the eighth time since the war, were winners of the Lord Tredegar Cup. In a effort to encourage junior players, the club staged a Junior Tournament, which proved highly successful. Some of the players who participated were as follows – Robert Harris and Elizabeth Evans (winners of their respective sections): Aneurin Collier and Ruth Williams (runners-up of their of their respective sections): Robert Harris and Elizabeth Evans both reached the last eight in the singles competitions in the Welsh Lawn Tennis Association championships.

1962 Season.
Newcomers Shine at Six Bells.
On Friday 4th of May 1962, the South Wales Gazette printed a story on the success of two schoolboys Clive Bourton and Jeff Thomas, who had gained notable victories when they made their first appearances for the Six Bells Tennis Club in the men’s friendly doubles match with Blackwood on Saturday 28th of April 1962. The boys won their three games and Six Bells team won 9-0. Some of the players who participated were as follows – H. Huckin; W. Mason; A. Hunt; R. Wallace; C. Bourton and J. Thomas:

Six Bells Tennis Club Defeated.
On Saturday 12th of May 1962, it was reported that for the first time in many years, both of the Six Bells Tennis Club’s men’s teams were defeated. The “A” team, invincible last year lost to Penylan 5 games to 4 in the second division of the Welsh League while the “B” team in their first match in the third division went down 9 games to nil. Names of the Six Bells men’s “A” team players were as follows – H. Huckin; A. Jones; W. Mason; A. True; C. Collier and R. Wallace: Names of the Six Bells men’s “B” team were as follows – A. Crozier; J. Dimmick; G. Ashley; A. Hunt; C. Bourton and G. Thomas, may have been J. Thomas? Mr G. Saunders was also listed and Mr G. Trenchard was mentioned as being in the team and was said to have been a former Abertillery rugby player.

Top of the League.
On Saturday 14th of July 1962, Six Bells Tennis Club team “A” went top of the section in Division II of the Welsh League and also qualified to play-off against other section winners for promotion to the First Division. Some of the players were named as follows – W. Mason; A. True; C. Collier; A. Jones; A. Hunt and R. Wallace:

Six Bells Junior Tennis Tournament.
On Saturday 21st of July 1962, the Six Bells Tennis Club held junior boys and girls tournaments. Names of those who took part were as follows – M. Edwards; R. Lewis; G. Gillingham; R. Morris; A. Collier; M. Rogers; C. Bourton; R. Mapp; D. Thomas; R. Wallace; D. Sheppard R. Harris and B. Tubb: C. Bourton beat M. Edwards in the final. In the girls tournament, only two girls participated, Elizabeth Evans, last years winner, defeated Janet Horler. The winner and runners-up will be entered into the Welsh Junior Championships beginning on 20th of August at Penarth.

Gareth James, the Welsh Lawn Tennis Association’s Under 16 Champion.
On Saturday 25th of August 1962, Gareth James, last seasons Welsh Lawn Tennis Association’s under 16 champion won the Welsh Junior title. Gareth lived at 3 Bennett Street, Blaina and as mentioned played at Six Bells a few seasons ago before moving to Newport to play at Stow Park.

It was reported that Raymond Mapp was the under 16 Welsh Champion, he was to enter this seasons under 18 section this year. No earlier report is available on when he actually achieved the win.

The Annual Junior Tennis Tournament.
On Saturday 10th of July 1965, the South Wales Gazette advertised the Six Bells Tennis Club’s Annual Junior Tennis Tournament to be held at the Six Bells Tennis Courts. Singles only – Boys under 14 and boys under 18, girls under 14 and girls under 18. Application forms available from Mr R. Wallace, Dunmore, Oak Street, Abertillery.

1966 Season.
Six Bells Tennis Stars.
In June 1966, Raymond Mapp, a 17 year old Six Bells tennis player, won the singles title in the annual Pontypridd tournament. He defeated G. Griffiths of Barry in straight sets and with Robert G. Wallis, also of Six Bells, won the doubles title in the same tournament. With his singles triumph while only 17, Raymond Mapp equalled a record set up in 1962. In the doubles with Robert G. Wallis, also 17, established a record as the youngest pair ever to gain the title. It was noted that these players are justifying Six Bells Tennis Club’s policy of concentrating on youth and all three players, Collier, Mapp and Wallis have played for South Wales in junior lawn tennis.

Six Bells Tennis Club’s Tennis Triumphs.
On Friday 26th of August 1966, the South Wales Gazette reported on the Six Bells tennis club’s team and individual years success. The men’s team won all their matches have gained promotion to the First Division of the Welsh Lawn Tennis League, this was seen as a great achievement for the team has been built up from scratch in the last two years. It was stated that of the team that had gained promotion from the Third to the Second Division in 1961, only one player, Tony Jones has a regular place in the current six.

Welsh Championship Tournament.
In August 1966, at the Welsh Championship Tournament, Raymond Mapp narrowly failed to become the under 18 champion at Penarth, he was beaten by Andrew Evans of Bridgend in the final. Gareth Gillingham and Robert Wallace won the Under 18 Doubles title. Aneurin Collier and Michael Fishout the other pair making up the team, also did well at Penarth, reaching the quarter-finals in the Singles and Doubles Under 18 events. Younger players, David Sheppard, Desmond Cooper and Ralph Stevens played in the Under 16 events, gaining valuable experience and showed good promise. David Sheppard and Robert Wallace won through to the Nestle Junior Tournament and will be playing in Exmouth, this week-end for places in the National Finals to be held in London in September.

The Six Bells Junior Junior Tennis Tournament.
On Saturday 3rd of September 1966, the Six Bells tennis tournament for juniors took place at Six Bells. The results were as follows – Boys under 18 champion, Paul Lewis, runner-up Lewis Ace: Girls under 18 campion, Janet Hunt, runner-up Linda Wallace: Boys under 16 champion, David Sheppard, runner-up Desmond Cooper: Girls under 16 champion, Linda Roan, runner-up Melanie Hall:

Six Bells Talent Shines.
In September 1966, the South Wales Gazette ran a story of the Six Bells Tennis Club’s players that are likely to become widely known in British tennis circles. It was reported that David Sheppard and Robert Wallace had competed in the Nestle Tournaments, they reached the Western Area finals and gave a good account of themselves before being eliminated, both intend to enter again next year. Raymond Mapp played at Junior Wimbledon this same week and he too seems certain to enhance his reputation within a year or two.

1967 Season.
A Third Court at Six Bells.
On Friday 14th of July 1967, the South Wales Gazette reported on the Six Bells Tennis Club’s request to the Abertillery Council for a third tennis court at the Six Bells Park and a shower at the pavilion. At a meeting of the Abertillery Allotments and Pleasure Ground Committee held on Monday 10th of July, members of the council said that a sub-committee should investigate the application further. Councillor Eddie Sheehan said the only problem was, the land, which the club wanted was where the small children played. Councillor Trevor Phinnemore objected and said “permission must be refused as it was robbing the toddlers of their ground”.

Six Bells Tennis Club Junior Tournament.
On Friday 28th of July 1967, the South Wales Gazette reported on the seventh annual Six Bells Tennis Club Junior Tournament. There was a record number of entries from the boys although there were fewer entries from the girls, it was stated that less than ever before took part. Apart from the high standards shown by Desmond Cooper and Ralph Stevens, eventual finalists there were a few newcomers to the event – Michael O’Riley of Six Bells, Paul Hunt of Six Bells, Phillips Tucker of Blaenau Gwent and Robert Bowen of Llanhilleth.

In the under 18 event, the finalists David Sheppard and Michael Edwards had testing semi-finals against Kenneth Hopkins and Lee J. Evans respectively. Lynda Roan was the only entrant in the girls Under 16 retained the trophy she won last year. Pauline Mapp and Gillian Roan contested the girls under 18 event. Full results – Boys under 16, Desmond Cooper beat Ralph Stevens 6-4, 6-3: Boys under 18, M. Evans beat D. Sheppard 6-4, 6-2: Girls under 16, Lynda Roan retained the title: Girls under 18, Pauline Mapp beat Gillian Roan 6-3, 6-2:

Best Year for the Young Six Bells Tennis Stars.
During August 1967, the Six Bells Tennis Club had successes in the three major junior tennis tournaments held in South Wales at Llanelli, Langland Bay and Penarth.

At Llanelli, David Sheppard won the under 16 event, defeating Neil Hortop of Dinas Powis in three sets. Robert Wallace was the losing finalist in the under 18 event, which was won by Andrew Evans of Bridgend.

At Langland Bay tournament, Robert Wallace reversed this result by defeating the same opponent in three sets. The boys doubles final Gareth Gillingham and Robert Wallace defeated Andrew Evans and Howard Cox of Cardiff. Robert Wallace also shared the mixed doubles title with Pamela Taylor of Skewen. In the Langland Bay under 16 boys event David Sheppard was defeated in the final by Stephen Joseph of Cardiff.

At Penarth, in the under 18 event, Robert Wallace won through to the final to play Andrew Evans. Robert Wallace scored a convincing two-set win to become the first Monmouthshire (under 18) Welsh Champion since Gareth James of Blaina in the early 1960’s. In the under 16 event, David Sheppard lost to Stephen Joseph in the quarter-finals. Gareth Gillingham was losing finalist in the mixed doubles partnered by Catherine Bevan of Cardiff. Desmond Cooper the Six Bells under 16 champion won the consolation singles event at Penarth. It was stated that, in the last four years, since Raymond Mapp won the under 16 Championship at Penarth in 1964, the boys of Six Bells, in the persons of Mapp, Sheppard and Wallace have won five of the six singles titles open to boys at the three tournaments.

These successes make 1967 the best year yet for individual Six Bells players. They follow Raymond Mapp’s retention of his Pontypridd title in singles and in doubles with Robert Wallace. Raymond Mapp also won the men’s handicap singles in the Newport Tournament in July, while Wallace and Gillingham won the men’s handicap doubles at Llanelli.

1968 Season.
The Battle for the Third Court at Six Bells.
In June 1968, the need for a third tennis court at Six Bells Park was raised. On Friday 14th of June 1968, the Six Bells Labour Party convened a meeting to hear the proposals and those arguments for and against. As mentioned above, the tennis club wanted the council to place a third tennis court in the park in a place where children play. Forty-seven people who attended the meeting voted in favour of the youngsters demand that they should retain their playing field while just five voted in support of the clubs third court. The area of land available was said to have been 1,700 square yards and the third tennis court would take up a space of 560 square yards only. There were a few later reports although the idea of a third court never seemed to come to anything.

The Carmarthenshire Championships.
Saturday 10th of August 1968, the Six Bells Lawn Tennis Club played in the Carmarthen championship. R. Wallace and R. Mapp won the men’s doubles and D. J. Sheppard won the under 16 boys’ singles and was runner-up in the under 18 boys’ singles.

Six Bells Tennis Club Junior Success.
On Thursday 26th of September 1968, the South Wales Gazette ran the story of the Six Bells Tennis Club’s junior achievements during the year. Some of the club members mentioned in the report were as follows – Ralph Stevens; Robert Bowen; Phillip Ace; Michael O’Riley; Gwyn Lake; Paul Hunt and Desmond Cooper: Younger players – lan James; Paul Lewis; Ken Hopkins and Glen Hughes:

At the Llanelli Tournament, David Sheppard won the under 16 title and also reached the the under 18 final.

At the Langland Bay Tournament, David Sheppard lost in the final to Chris Williams (brother of J. P. R. Williams) of Bridgend. This was repeated in the Welsh Championships in Penarth, but he partnered Chris Williams there to win the under 16 Welsh Doubles Championship.

Among the senior members, the former Junior Welsh champions, Raymond Mapp and Robert Wallace registered more successes, playing together they won the Handicap Doubles at Llanelli and gave a good account of themselves at the Cardiff Castle Invitation Tournament.

Robert Wallace became the first Six Bells member to play for South Wales in the annual “County Week” and both Raymond and Robert have been chosen to play for South Wales in Hard Court Championship matches during the autumn.

At the Worcester Championship held in Malvern, Robert Wallace won the major event, the under 21 singles.

This season also saw a revival of interest among the girl members. Melanie Hall, Lynda Roan and Linda Wallace competed at the Welsh Championships and did well.

The club men’s “A” team maintained its place in the 1st Division of the Welsh Tennis League and the “B” team had a good record in the 3rd Division which will see them be promoted into the 2nd Division.

In the same edition as above, there was a photograph of the South Wales Tennis Team. Players named were – G. Battrick (Great Britain tennis champion under 21); B. L. Jones (Cardiff); A. G. Batcup (London) and R. G. Wallace (Six Bells); J. P. R. Williams (tennis champion of Wales and Welsh Rugby full-back); T. Tucker (Captain) and R. W. Davies (Newport):
