The same newspaper article stated that the Six Bells Tennis Club would like to enter the Welsh Lawn Tennis League, although they are prevented from doing so because they have only two courts and the Welsh League requires clubs to have at least three courts. Annual Meeting.
On Thursday 19th of February 1970, the Gwent Gazette reported on an annual meeting of Six Bells Lawn Tennis Club where a council member of the Welsh Lawn Tennis Association had stated that there was enough latent tennis ability in the area to ensure that the club would continue to progress and raise standards still further. Mr Robert Wallace, the Monmouthshire representative on the W.L.T.A., and secretary of the Six Bells Club, said that good coaching would promote these aims. He congratulated three members of the club – Messrs G. Collier, A. Jones and R. G. Wallace, who had gained the L.T.A., elementary coaching certificate. Reporting on the 1969 season, Mr Wallace said that the “A” team had achieved their best record yet in the first division of the Welsh Lawn Tennis League. At the end of last season the club were placed mid-way in the league, with the prospect of better things to come.

Six Bells versus Dinas Powis and Mr Raymond Mapp.
On Thursday 7th of May 1970, the Gwent Gazette reported – The Six Bells tennis team to play against Dinas Powis at Abertillery on Saturday does not include former Welsh under sixteen champion Mr Raymond Mapp. It stated the twenty-one year old player has not yet signed for the valley club and has expressed a wish to join the elite Cardiff Castle Club. Mapp was one of the original young players who was spotted as potential material some seven years ago and has helped the Six Bells Club achieve and to retain first division status for the last four years.
The report went on to say – Looking through the fixture list of the Welsh Lawn Tennis Association there is a dearth of valley tennis clubs among those listed, the geographically unsuitable valley clubs, who cannot boast such lush grass, as say, Dinas Powis and Rhiwbina for example, are the Cinderellas of Welsh lawn tennis. It is for this reason that it would be good if Raymond Mapp were to stay at Six Bells and help foster a fine sport where it is needed most.
The Abertillery Club are looking forward to an exciting season and are fielding two gents sides, one in the first division and one in the third division of the Welsh League. Their side to play Dinas Powis was as follows – Bob Wallace, Alan Hunt, Tony Jones, David Sheppard, Cliff Collier, Ralph Stevens and Michael O’Riley as reserve. The second team have an away fixture with Newport Athletic Club. The ladies have a team in the second division of the Welsh league. Two of the most outstanding players are Abertillery schoolgirls Melanie Hall and Linda Wallace, both are eighteen years old and although Linda plays a more orthodox game, Melanie is a more determined player. Melanie Hall played for the South Wales junior team in the county series at Easter.

1972 Season.
A New Season in Division One of the Welsh League.
On Friday 28th of April 1972, the Gwent Gazette printed a article “Who’s for tennis”. A new season has started for the Six Bells Tennis Club which won promotion to Division 1 of the Welsh League last year. The club is earning itself a reputation of being the “Cinderella” club of South Wales. It is based on two courts in the Six Bells Park which is a far cry from the extensive facilities of its wealthy rivals, who have large numbers of players to draw on.
Mr Robert Wallace, the Club’s chairman, said, “In Abertillery tennis has to squeeze its way in-between all the other sports, especially rugby. Further difficulties are caused, he said, because a number of players are studying at colleges away from home which limits the number of matches in which they can represent the club. Though the men’s team had won promotion the ladies have fared less well, they are bottom of their Division and Mr Wallace said, the ladies don’t seem to have the same amount of interest as their male counterparts and the club do with more players, especially ladies. The club start their league programme with an away match against Mackintosh on May 6th with every intention of finishing well in the league table to prove that you don’t have to have money behind you if you want success.

Six Bells Tennis Club Could Die – More Courts Needed.
On Friday 21st of July 1972, the Gwent Gazette ran the following article – Six Bells Tennis Club could die, more courts are needed. Six Bells, one of the foremost clubs in South Wales may fade out of existence if additional courts are not provided by the council, says Mr Robert Wallace, of Abertillery. This year the club is in the top four of Division One, a feat to be marvelled at considering the club plays all its matches on two courts in a public park. Several Welsh junior champions have been produced by the club which specialises in coaching its younger players. Recent successes include Mr Wallace’s son Bob, who was in the Welsh team which played England recently and Paul Hunt who has reached the final in the National Scouts competition.
Mr Wallace said – “The club’s original request for a third court at Six Bells was made at least nine years ago and the position as become more desperate since the past five years”. He went on to say – “It was impossible to play higher standards of tennis on the courts in Abertillery Park which have slow playing surfaces, suitable only for coaching beginners”. “The courts at Llanhilleth are unsuitable because of constant vandalism there” he added. “This leaves only two courts at Six Bells, which have the best playing surfaces in the district”.
The council are considering their decision on the matter but if the provision of another court at Six Bells Park would mean taking away grassed playing areas for children there would certainly be objections from near-by residents.
Mr Paul Hunt.
On Saturday 22nd of July 1972, Paul Hunt of Kimberley Road, Six Bells, Abertillery, a member of the Six Bells Tennis Team reached the final of the Wayfinder National Scout Lawn Tennis Championships at the Queens Club, London. The Council’s Refusal to Relay the Tennis Courts.
On Thursday 15th of April 1976, the Gazette Gazette ran a story on the terrible conditions of the tennis courts as follows – Councillor Harry Evans and Councillor Norman Jones, chairman and vice-chairman respectively, of the Borough’s Leisure and Amenities Committee were to visit Six Bells Tennis Club to see the state of the tennis courts. The committee members had agreed to send representatives to the club after receiving a letter from the tennis players explaining that the courts are in a dangerous state and asking for them to be resurfaced and another new court to be provided.
Mr David Nash, Director of Leisure, said there was no money put aside for this purpose. Mr George Cramp, Director of Works said there was no money for general maintenance. Councillor Lloyd Williams, said “I am concerned that the courts had deteriorated, and if we are going to restore the courts to a decent condition then we must not didn’t want to deprive other areas of more urgently needed things”. He said, ” I would not like to see for example, Ebbw Vale or Tredegar go without something they urgently need for the sake of the Six Bells Tennis Club”. Councillor Paddy Byrne commented “This club never asks us for anything, surely we can do something to help them”. The Gazette included a photograph of the Six Bells Tennis Courts with Mr Robert Wallace (Secretary) and Mr Cliff Collier (Chairman) examining the pitted surface of the damaged courts, they say are badly in need of repair.

Mr George Cramp, Director of Works with Blaenau Gwent told councillors that there were two methods of improving the courts. He suggested the courts at Abertillery Park might be a suitable alternative. Councillor Paddy Byrne said “Abertillery Park is in such an awkward position, these tennis players want to play at home, they are one of the top clubs in Wales”. Members of the Council’s Leisure Committee heard that council members and officers had met to discuss the plan. It was suggested that an area of land, being used at present on a temporary basis by the Pony Club. Six Bells Tennis Club, at present are using the two courts at Abertillery Park. The problem is, the Welsh Lawn Tennis Association requires first division clubs to provide three tennis courts and only two were available at Abertillery Park. It had, therefore, been suggested that three courts be provided at Cwmnantygroes. Further meetings were to be arranged.
On Thursday 20th of October 1983, the Gwent Gazette issued an update on the proposed new three courts at Six Bells where they say they are considering laying. Mr David Nash, the director of leisure pointed out that to provide three all weather courts would cost in the region of £20,000. Six Bells Tennis Club Success 1983.
On Thursday 27th of October 1983, the Gwent Gazette reported on the success of the Six Bells Tennis Club at the end of the season. The Six Bells tennis team finished their league fixtures on a high note. The team finished as runners-up in the South Wales Premier League to Mackintosh, finishing above Cardiff for the first time in many seasons. After wins over Malvern, Bridgend and Gloucester, the club were unfortunate to lose an unfinished match to Newport in the Slazenger Club Championship of Great Britain regional final, having reached the last 16 clubs nationwide on three previous occasions. The last success came in the South Wales 2nd Division Singles League with the team winning in style with the loss of only one event out of twenty-four played.
On the Tournament scene, the Six Bells players achieved many honours. Firstly at Easter, the Cardiff (Penylan) Open Doubles Championship, saw an all Six Bells final, with Robert Wallace and David Sutton beating Chris Hill and Phillip Collings 7-5, 6-2. At the Welsh Championship, Robert Wallace reached the semi-final having beaten Chris Hill in the quarter-final. This event is open to all veterans in Great Britain and the final is played at the All England Club at Wimbledon.

1984 Season.
Chris Hill.
In 1984 Chris Hill of the Six Bells Tennis Club was Welsh captain.
During 1984 there were no news reports on the tennis club at Six Bells. There was however one update in the Gwent Gazette dated 13th of September. The headline was – Six Bells Struggle for Good Courts, the story read – Six Bells Tennis Club, one of the strongest playing sides in Wales. are having difficulty with the Welsh Lawn Tennis Association dur to the playing areas provided by the Blaenau Gwent Borough Council.
Their record for the 1984 season is quite formidable having lost only one match in the Welsh Premier League since May of this year as well as reaching the last 16 of the Slazenger Club Championships of Great Britain, which in turn made them Welsh Club Champions. Six Bells Tennis Club also won every Open Invitation Tournament in South Wales in addition to being Gwent Premier League Champions and finalists in the Gwent Knock Out Championships. The club feels that with such current statistics, help should be forthcoming as two courts in a public park are inadequate to sustain such a high standard of tennis as large numbers of youngsters were now joining the club and need better facilities. It was hoped, therefore, that the priority would be given by Blaenau Gwent Authority to raising the standards necessary to continue to compete in Welsh League Championships.
On Thursday 22nd of November 1984, the Gwent Gazette reported on the Six Bells Tennis Club’s most successful season in competitions in its sixty year history. Although losing an away fixture to Cardiff in early May, the club remained unbeaten in South Wales for the remainder of the season, which have also taken in two wins since, over the Cardiff club.
