The Vivian Colliery Waste Tip Fire.
The fire in the waste tip at the Vivian Colliery (as seen in the image) started in about 1892-93. In July 1907 the Gazette Newspaper reported on the fire and said it had been a nuisance over the past years but now after these years it was becoming a health hazard and a put-off to people wanting to buy property or have houses built in the area around the colliery. The owners Powell’s Tillery Steam Coal Co stated they did not know how they could stop the tip from burning and they were looking for ideas.
Also seen in the image is the new headgear and the buildings for the Vivian flight, (bottom left) the engine house, bunker and filling station.
