Mining Engineers Tools. A selection of various precision engineers tools. These tools were used by the surface craftsmen in the fitting shops. This set is from Rose Heyworth Colliery, Abertillery.

Endless Haulage Rope Clip. Made from iron. Size of the clamp box is 8″ x 6″ x 4″ inches, overall length including the hook and handle is 32″ inches long. Dog Nails. Made from iron. Size 3″ inches long.  These iron dog nails were used to secure the rails to wooden sleepers underground. You would hammer them into the wooden sleepers one each side of the rail. They became obsolete when the iron sleepers with bolted rail tabs were introduced into the industry.

Track Layers Rail Plates. Made from iron. Size 14″ x 2″ inches.  These iron plates were called “fish plates” they were used to connect dram rails together underground. They were connected with short square shafted dome-head bolts.

Ring Bolts. A pile of ring bolts. Made from iron. Size 5″ x 1 1/4″ inches. These bolts were used to connect ring plates to the ring (roof arches) below ground.
